Deriva

This project is the result of a meeting of two generations: two ways of understanding and living dance, two forms of communication and expression. In May 2004, Meritxell Barberá and Inma García travelled to Montpellier (France). There they met Germana Civera, a Valencian choreographer and dancer who had lived in France for the last 20 years. After this meeting, she was asked to take over the direction of the duo.

Meritxell and Inma wanted to put into practice an idea they had in mind for a long time: dancing for the first time together and as the only dancers on stage. This was the first time both were directed by another choreographer.

The work was an experimental creation based on a text by Mikel Labastida about the different hidden faces of human beings. This idea reflects on the different ways of seeing, and from there on an exploration of what is hidden and what is shown. Like Rubik’s Cubes, we all have several faces and at times they are disordered, and it is difficult to put them in the right place in harmony with the others. When we stand in front of a mirror, we see different distorted images of ourselves which almost never match with the image others have of us. We all try to live with all these different selves within us. This leads us to a drift (“Deriva”).

This work is an experiment, a challenge and a game. It is about the strange forces that move us into action, without knowing if we are acting correctly or not. Deriva is about doubts, an inner journey into ourselves, to our heart of darkness. It is about love and about drifting through love and the way love is constructed.
